The list of products consisting of polymers is almost endless. As a matter of fact, they have revolutionized medicine, transportation, and even space travel. And when you think of airbags and helmets, you’ll understand polymers even save lives daily.
Looking at all the products developed with polymers, one can witness the massive progress they have enabled, both for our society and for ourselves as individuals.
Society benefits from polymers, for example, in the energy transition. They are the material of choice for the blades of wind turbines or, more recently, the most advanced solar cells in solar panels. And as they are lightweight, they allow car manufacturers to build cars that are lighter and thus consume less. They are crucial to guarantee hygiene in the medical sector, with syringes, infusion bags or surgical gloves.
Polymers help reducing food waste, as plastic packaging allows fruits and vegetables to be kept fresh for longer. And tyres are an excellent example of how polymers are critical in mobility. Access to a basic need as clean water is made possible thanks to polymers: pipes bring clean water to households, and pouches allow people in remote areas with no access to sanitation to consume clean water.
In our personal lives too, polymers are bringing comfort and safety. They are durable, so babies can find comfort from their pacifier night after night. They are resistant, so you can drop your glasses or phone without worrying about it breaking, Polymers are affordable, allowing our kids to bring a lunchbox to school. They are secure, protecting drivers and passengers with ultra strong seat belts. And they are omnipresent in sports with strings, sports fields, shoes, protective gear and so on.

That being said, … We acknowledge that the sense of endless possibilities of polymers speeds up their irresponsible use. The progress polymers bring comes with a downsideBecause polymers are affordable, it has driven companies and consumers to use and abuse hundreds of millions of tonnes of polymers a year. As consumers, we are often not aware of their polluting effect, and industries are not always incentivized to optimize their usage in the fabrication of our everyday products.
A couple of examples:
• Cosmetics & clothing carrying microplastics
• Coloured packaging of shampoo bottles that can’t enter the existing waste streams
• Low quality plastics in kids’ toys that are not always safe nor long lasting
• Cookies wrapped in individual packaging, and wrapped together in another bigger packaging
• Disposable coffee cups coated in plastic, and with plastic lids
• Salads in film & PET box
With the result that more and more unnecessary polymer waste enters watercourses, floats in the seas, flies with the wind, lies on the beach, and lingers on the streets. This impacts water quality, entails soil contamination and contributes to biodiversity loss.
